Fudgies

So we decided to go on a family vacation to Michigan - Jon and the kids have only been to the areas surrounding my Mom and Dad's house and it's been years since I've been around the state.  We decided to trace the mitten.  Started in Ludington for the Dunes and some fudge, on to Traverse City for some lunch and some pie, over to Mackinac Island for some old time fun and some fudge, down to Frankenmuth for some Chicken and some Christmas decor then back to Grandma and Grandpa's for a tornado and the Coney Island…and to polish off the fudge!  Sad but true, I conducted my own fudge taste test - Kilwin's, Murdick's and Joanne's - and I've decided Joanne's has the best authentic Mackinac Island fudge.  If you've never had it before, you must - delicious!  We had a good trip, except Gavin was sick for much of it (continuing our tradition of at least ONE of us being sick on EVERY vacation we have been on thus far), so that was rough and I was pretty worried about him at times. It was a nice trip and Michigan really is a lovely state, I'm pretty sure we will be back soon!
Big family news - we have purchased our very first camper!  We bought a fifth wheel that is a couple years old but in very good condition.  It's in storage in Michigan until we buy the truck to haul it.  I've already made our reservations for Fort Wilderness Campground at Disney World for next year - I'm very excited!!  I'll post pictures as soon as I get some decent ones.  So now our vacations will be slightly different and will involve lots of driving!  Stay tuned!

We took a jeep tour of the sand dunes.  It was very fun except we were one of the only jeeps that had 1) an American behind the wheel and 2) an American who had actually driven before (sarcasm).  So after we hung around for quite a few of the other jeeps to get pulled out of the sand (despite SEVERAL reminders to give it some gas and do NOT spin your tires), our trip was quite a bit shortened.  The tour leader apologized to us and I wanted to ask him for another trip…one without beginners.  But, it was fun, windy, very sandy and I'm sure we will do it again.

On the ferry to Mackinac Island

Teaching the kids how to skip stones - Harper has form!!
You can see the Mackinac Bridge in the distance.  Look how pretty the water looks too!

Gavin decided that just throwing rocks was much more entertaining!

We biked around the entire island - would have been nice if one of us had remembered to bring even just one bottle of water!

Our tour of the island ended back at Main Street - such fun without cars!

What would a trip to Michigan be without a trip to Greenfield Village…and in 100 degree weather too?!

You can't see but Gavin is very intent on making car noises as he drives

Harper is very relaxed driving us around

And it turns out she and Grandma are expert mechanics!

Watching the model trains

So that's it!  I'll put up Halloween pictures asap…and then it's Christmas!  Yikes!
