With Harper's birthday fast approaching and a lot of attention focused on her lately, I thought I would post a few things that Gavin's been doing lately. Gavin, Harper and I went to the "On the go" sponsored by our local Parents as Teachers group - basically a day of transportation fun for kids. They bring in all the favorites - fire truck, ambulance, police car, mail truck, school bus, police boat, helicopter, motorcycle - and let all the kiddos climb all over them!! This year, Gavin got to talk into the police car intercom AND ring the sirens! He had a blast climbing into all the vehicles and honking the horns. Harper was a trooper and just enjoyed being outside in her stroller. Gavin must have been happy too, because he's the one who added the hat for Harper's enjoyment!
A few years ago we bought the playset for Gavin and at the time, they offered a sandbox in the bottom for something like $500 or we could get the free picnic table - so we took the picnic table (duh) and probably used it 5 times. I had visions of all the kiddies eating and coloring on that table....reality was it was hot and bug filled. So last time my Dad was here, he took the table and benches off and Gavin would play and dig in the rubber mulch. Then when my parents came for Easter, I asked my Dad if he was willing to build a Sandbox using the pieces from the picnic table - I had measured them and they actually fit perfectly to make walls on all four sides. The easy part was screwing the pieces in place, the hard part was hauling the 1500 pounds of sand!!! Yes, you read correctly - 1500 pounds of sand!! Luckily my Dad had his new F450 and could actually haul the sand - but then Jon and my Dad had to haul it to the backyard. End result - a fun sandbox that saved us $400!
Gavin and I just got back today from our first road trip together in quite a while - we traveled to Chattanooga, TN for my Goddaughters First Communion. We had a great time visiting Kim and her family and Gavin's a good traveler too. I've never been aware of so many tractors, Fed Ex trucks, blue cars, small cars and campers on the highway as I was this trip thanks to Gavin's eagle eye! It was good for Gavin to be with Emma, Luke and Elise for 2 solid days too, constant playmates and it was obvious he had a grand time. We were busy all weekend visiting all the kid friendly places in Chattanooga and celebrating Emma and Luke's 1st Communion. On Friday we went on a duck boat tour, visited the Chattanooga Choo choo, had yummy lunch and ice cream downtown and played outside at their house. Friday was my birthday and Kim made a good dinner and had my favorite cherry pie to celebrate. Saturday was the first communion, a celebratory luncheon after and then we headed to the North Shore/Side (?) to have some water fun before our Cinco de Mayo dinner at Amigoes. It was crazy constantly, but it was fun for me to see Gavin interact with all the kids and watch how he responds to being just one of the kids. Two funny Gavin-isms from our trip: I had bought Gavin some Chuckles for a treat in the car and when he couldn't get them open, he asked me to open them for him. I was driving and struggling to open the Chuckles when Gavin says in an exasperated voice "What could possibly take you this long to open Chuckles Mama?". Even I had to laugh at that one as I explained the process of trying to keep us on the road and open the chuckles at the same time. Then, when we were at Kim's house, I had written all the kids names on the cups and used capital letters so Gavin's name looked like this "GAVIN" but apparently my I looks like an L. Gavin opens the door from the deck and says "look at my letters Mom - G A V L N. From now on my name is Gavlyn". And he laughed hysterically and had all the kids call him Gavlyn for a while. It was a good trip for both of us to get to spend some one on one time together, plus Gavin got to spend some time with the kids and I got to see my best friend Kim, whom I miss and don't get to see very often. We had a great time and here are some of the pictures before my camera batteries died. Kim will probably have about 400 more, so I'll post more if she has any more good ones.
Eating lunch downtown - with yummy sweet tea for me!
Getting ready to go on the duck boats with Kim, her Mom and Dad and the kids.Kim's Dad bought all the kids Quackers.
Gavin and Elise posing for the pic.
Gavin and all the kids got a turn driving the boat. Gavin literally strong armed the captain when he tried to turn the steering wheel for Gavin. Gavin wanted no part of being told which way to turn. Luckily the captain had a sense of humor AND was stronger than Gavin!
All of us at the Chattanooga Choo Choo

Checking out the fish pond
We got a nice trolley tour of the parking lot of the Chattanooga Choo Choo - AND it only cost Kim's Dad $2/person. What a deal. (Heavy, heavy sarcasm).

Playing in the fountains
This is the last picture as my camera died, so I didn't get any pics of the rest of the kids...but I am SURE Kim did ;-)
So only 6 more days until the big 1st birthday!!! I can't believe it and I can't wait for her big day. Oh and a Happy Birthday to Riley too, she turned 8 on May 2nd. We celebrated with a big frosted bone....well, Riley did anyway, we just sang!a
